Hermantown volleyball coach Jessica Williams on her still unbeaten team – "We are playing really well right now. The girls have been working hard in practice and that is showing in our games. The next three weekends we are in the Twin Cities for tournaments and then a big game against Grand Rapids on October 1, which is also our Dig Pink Night. We are currently going into the weekend undefeated at 10-0 which the girls are pumped about. We have nine seniors this year and I hold some pretty high expectations, so for these girls to be playing at the level they are playing, I couldn't be more excited. All the girls have stepped up and are working hard on and off the court. We are taking one game at a time and yes, we look at the future, but truly focus on our next match, get through that one, and move on to the next."

Take a Bow

James Sellwood (Class of 1988), a three-sport student-athlete who lettered in football, basketball and track, will be inducted into the Hermantown Football Hall of Fame at Friday's home game against Rock Ridge.

He lettered in track in grades 9-12 and went to state in the 4x100 meter relay where the team placed fourth when he was a junior and sixth when he was a senior.

Sellwood lettered in basketball as a junior and senior and was a co-captain of the basketball team as a senior. The Hawks were district champions during his senior year of 1987-88.

Sellwood lettered in football as a junior and senior and during the fall of 1987 as a senior lined up as a wingback, halfback and even punted once. He had 592 yards rushing and 389 yards receiving and 13 touchdowns. He was voted by the Duluth Quarterback Club as the Most Valuable Player of the Hawks during his senior year, was sec0nd-team all-Duluth News Tribune and first-team all-conference. That year the Hawks tied for the Sea Range Conference title.

Sellwood received a scholarship to play football at Bemidji State University, where he played as a halfback and a punt returner during his freshman year. His football career came to an end that same fall because of a car accident. He moved back to the Duluth area and graduated from Lake Superior College and was hired by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, where he was promoted to sergeant in 2016 and is set to retire next week.

Howie: Vikings burning it down

That’s the tragedy of this season — it’s not the losing, it’s the lying. Every move is sold as “strategic.” Every mistake is “part of the process.” Every loss is “valuable learning.” It’s a corporate PowerPoint in shoulder pads. This isn’t football anymore. It’s asset management in cleats.

Howie: Bulldogs, Viktor Plante, Mirage, Jason Watt

There’s something quietly magnetic about Jason Watt on a Bulldogs hockey broadcast. He’s not trying to sound like anyone else. He doesn’t force energy or jargon. He just explains the game — clearly, comfortably, and with the kind of authenticity that comes only from having lived it.

Howie: C.J. Ham’s clock is ticking

The likeliest play is a polite handshake extension — one year, maybe two, at something closer to $2 million per. A team-friendly, locker-room-cred deal.
