Man arrested in Duluth after fleeing hospital following domestic assault allegation

Authorities say Thorson later left the hospital without authorization, prompting a renewed search effort over the weekend.

DULUTH (HH)— A 37-year-old Duluth man who fled a hospital after being taken into custody for an alleged domestic assault was arrested Monday following a tactical response by police.

Daniel Thorson was located inside an apartment at Greysolon Plaza, where officers had secured a search warrant after receiving information about his whereabouts. According to Duluth police, multiple commands were issued for Thorson to exit a bedroom voluntarily. When those failed, the department’s Tactical Response Team forced entry and detained him without further incident.

Thorson was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and is expected to be booked into the St. Louis County Jail. He faces pending charges of felony domestic assault and misdemeanor obstruction.

Police say the original incident occurred early Friday morning, July 25, when officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance on the 800 block of East Ninth Street. A woman with visible injuries was found outside the home and treated at the scene. Thorson was located in a nearby residence and taken into custody at that time.

Authorities say Thorson later left the hospital without authorization, prompting a renewed search effort over the weekend.

No further details about the woman’s condition or the circumstances of Thorson’s hospital escape were released. The case remains under investigation.

Bayfront remains one of the few places where the city still functions the way a healthy city is supposed to function: as a shared public space where people continue gathering together because they genuinely want to be there. Every summer, Duluth remembers that again.

Survival, for many old industrial American cities during the late twentieth century, became the central challenge itself. Doty helped Duluth survive long enough to rediscover confidence in itself again. That is not a minor civic legacy.
