Hermantown High Sports Notebook, Sunday

The Hermantown boys track and field team showcased its superior team depth and benefited by impressive performances from several elite performers to win the prestigious 69th annual Doc Savage Invitational championship by a single point on Saturday afternoon in Hibbing.

Hawks standout Martin Sleen won four events and broke two school records, and tied one meet record. Adian Adamski won the Knesovich Award for Best Thrower of the Meet.

"Today was a great day for Hermantown boys track as we continue to improve our times and distances,” Hawks coach Tyler Homstad said after the event. “I think that our guys are understanding that when you work hard, you can reap the benefits of that hard work when it matters.

“These guys are just starting to understand how team scoring works in the track and field world as they won their second big meet of the year. Between having two boys and one girl pole vaulting for the first time in almost 40 years, two school records getting broken, 15 PR's, and winning the meet by a one-point margin, I am still amped up!"

The Hawks will participate in the True Team Sectionals in Cloquet on Tuesday, in the Ojbelluzzo Invitational in Chisholm on Thursday and at a multi-team invitational at Duluth Denfeld on Friday.

Howie: Bayfront still may be Duluth’s best idea

Bayfront remains one of the few places where the city still functions the way a healthy city is supposed to function: as a shared public space where people continue gathering together because they genuinely want to be there. Every summer, Duluth remembers that again.

Howie: While others talked revival, Gary Doty did the work

Survival, for many old industrial American cities during the late twentieth century, became the central challenge itself. Doty helped Duluth survive long enough to rediscover confidence in itself again. That is not a minor civic legacy.
