“For 76 years, the Alworth Memorial Fund has realized there’s no better investment than in northern Minnesota young people with a passion for pursuing careers in math and science-related fields.” -- Patty Salo Downs, Executive Director of the Fund

The Marshall H. and Nellie Alworth Memorial Fund has awarded its 2025 scholarships to 97 northern Minnesota students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in fields of study related to mathematics, engineering, the sciences, medicine and scientific research.

Ninety-one scholarships for $24,000 each were awarded to seniors from 33 high schools. Six additional awards were $12,000 College Transfer Pathway Scholarships, for community college sophomores graduating with an associate in science degree who will be pursuing a qualifying bachelor's degree during their final two years of schooling at a four-year university.

All told, the Alworth Memorial Fund awarded $2,256,000 in its 2025 round of scholarships. Since the Fund’s founding in 1949, it has awarded $58.9 million to 5,491 motivated young people.

“For 76 years, the Alworth Memorial Fund has realized there’s no better investment than in northern Minnesota young people with a passion for pursuing careers in math and science-related fields,” said Patty Salo Downs, Executive Director of the Fund. “The 2025 scholarship class is no exception. We can’t wait to see what new discoveries they make in the coming years to make the world a better place.”

Alworth Scholarships are available to students in 60 high schools, plus those who are homeschooled, in these 10 northern Minnesota counties: Aitkin, Beltrami, Carlton, Cass, Cook, Crow Wing, Lake, Itasca, Koochiching and St Louis.

No one’s saying a banner’s coming soon — heck, we’d settle for a .500 record and a home win over Iowa. But watch closely. You’ll see something forming here, underneath the dust and the growing pains. A plan. A pulse. A program.
