The Vikings bolstered their secondary Monday by signing cornerback Stephon Gilmore, adding another 158 starts to the team.

The five-time Pro Bowler and two-time First-Team All-Pro joins Minnesota for his 13th NFL season, having started all 17 games he played for Dallas in 2023.

Gilmore, the 10th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, has 31 career interceptions and is credited with 140 passes defensed. His resume includes six interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns, and 20 passes defended with New England in 2019, a season that culminated in him receiving Defensive Player of the Year honors from The Associated Press.

Gilmore, who will turn 34 in September, began his career with the Buffalo Bills, overlapping with Vikings Assistant Head Coach Mike Pettine in 2013 when Pettine was Buffalo's defensive coordinator. After five seasons with the Bills, Gilmore joined the Patriots for four seasons and helped New England win Super Bowl LIII, nabbing an interception in the 13-3 win over the Rams.

Vikings Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores handled play-calling duties and coached linebackers for the Patriots during that 2018 season.

Gilmore joined Carolina in 2021 before heading to Indianapolis in 2022.

He started all 16 games he played for the Colts that season before joining the Cowboys.

Minnesota also waived punter Seth Vernon and receiver Ty James. Vernon competed with third-year pro Ryan Wright, while James joined the Vikings this spring as an undrafted free agent.

Howie: AF1 CEO Kurz bullish about Duluth franchise, DECC Arena

Jerry Kurz on the Monsters: “Very strong franchise. We’re very selective. I get calls every week from people who want to join. But we have to be sure they’re giving something back to the community. Jake (Lambert, owner) and Steve (Walters, general manager and minority owner) want that."

Howie: The city budget they don't want you to understand

Local Government Aid alone covers nearly $35 million, about one-third of the budget. It’s the difference between black ink and red. Lose even 5 percent of that aid, and Duluth’s “balanced” budget implodes by millions. That’s not financial strength — that’s dependence disguised as stability.
