Howie's Sports Notebook, Saturday

“However, we have yet to have a complete a full game. We are hoping that as we continue to build that an ‘aha moment’ will come and we will be able to show teams what we can do for 36 minutes.” -- Hermantown girls basketball coach Eric Borndal

Hermantown’s girls basketball team left it all on the court in a hard-fought, 52-48 victory at Duluth East last Friday night. “While we struggled to put points on the board in the first half, it was really fun to watch the girls play a solid second half of unselfish basketball,” first-year Hawks coach Eric Borndal said afterward.

While Bailey Hermanson led the way for Hermantown with 18 points, it was the solid assists from Annika Nelson and Oliva Johnson that got her going, said Borndal.

Danika Bolf also hit a key free throw to seal the game, and in the end, we were very happy to leave East with the win,” Borndal added.

Hermantown (9-3) lost to East Grand Forks 58-52 on Friday night and faces Crookston today, as the Hawks continue a challenging 10-game road stretch.

“We’re looking forward to a time to build chemistry and play teams that we don't know a ton about,” said Borndal of this weekend’s nonconference games. “More than anything, we as coaches are hoping that the girls are able to enjoy this season while learning from our mistakes and building on our successes. We believe we have one of the deepest teams in our section, and if we can learn to utilize all of our assets we think that as January continues it will be a lot of fun.

“However, we have yet to have a complete a full game. We are hoping that as we continue to build that an ‘aha moment’ will come and we will be able to show teams what we can do for 36 minutes.”
