Kevin O'Connell has received a number of accolades for his coaching prowess.

Now, the 2025 NFL Coach of the Year is also being recognized for his professionalism and work with the media away from the football field.

O'Connell has been named the 2025 Horrigan Award Winner, the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) announced Friday. The honor comes on the heels of his third season at the Vikings helm, during which he led Minnesota to a 14-3 record in the regular season and an appearance in the postseason.

According to the PFWA, the award is given annually to a league, club or other official for his or her qualities and professional style in helping the pro football writers do their job. The following was written of O'Connell for consideration:

O'Connell stands out from his coaching peers because of his openness and helpfulness with reporters. He routinely gives 1-on-1 interviews, meets regularly with beat writers for off-the-record discussions, provides thoughtful explanations for his decisions after games, and he creates an environment for both players and assistant coaches — like Grant Udinski, the assistant QB coach who became the Jaguars offensive coordinator — feel free to tell their stories.

Since his hire, O'Connell has been gracious with both external and internal media members, often providing insightful responses during press conferences.

He was selected by the PFWA from a group of five finalists that also included Rams President Kevin Demoff, 49ers General Manager John Lynch, NFL Vice President of Communications Brian McCarthy and NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent.

O'Connell is the first person to win the Horrigan Award as a Viking. The honor has been presented since 1973. Former Vikings General Manager Jim Finks (1964-73) won it in 1991 while with the Saints, former Vikings QBs Archie Manning and Warren Moon won it before joining Minnesota, and former Defensive Coordinator Tony Dungy won it after becoming head coach of the Buccaneers.

Howie: AF1 CEO Kurz bullish about Duluth franchise, DECC Arena

Jerry Kurz on the Monsters: “Very strong franchise. We’re very selective. I get calls every week from people who want to join. But we have to be sure they’re giving something back to the community. Jake (Lambert, owner) and Steve (Walters, general manager and minority owner) want that."

Howie: The city budget they don't want you to understand

Local Government Aid alone covers nearly $35 million, about one-third of the budget. It’s the difference between black ink and red. Lose even 5 percent of that aid, and Duluth’s “balanced” budget implodes by millions. That’s not financial strength — that’s dependence disguised as stability.
