The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a wave of scam calls in which callers falsely claim to be law enforcement officers and demand money for supposed court-related violations.

Authorities said several residents have reported receiving calls from people pretending to represent the Sheriff’s Office, often claiming the recipient missed a court date or failed to appear as a witness. The scammers then demand payment, sometimes by cash, credit card or gift card.

“These calls are not legitimate,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Law enforcement does not call members of the public to request or collect payment over the phone.”

Officials urged anyone who receives such a call not to provide any form of payment or personal information. Questions about court fines should be directed to court administration.

Residents who wish to report the scam or file a police report are asked to call 911.

Ramps connecting Highway 53 with Interstates 35 and 535 in Duluth are scheduled to open early Friday, Oct. 24, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced.

Also opening are the connecting ramps between Garfield Avenue and the I-535 Blatnik Bridge, marking the completion of major construction on the Twin Ports Interchange. MnDOT officials said only landscaping and cleanup work will continue into 2026.

The project, which began in 2021, includes safety upgrades, smoother traffic flow and improvements designed to better handle heavy freight through the Twin Ports area.

MnDOT urged motorists to use caution when navigating the new ramps, obey posted speed limits and remain alert to changing traffic patterns.
