John Gilbert on the 2-0 Vikings – "Only two games in, Sam Darnold has been nearly flawless, especially after conquering the 49ers, who went into the game as a favorite to reach the Super Bowl. The Vikings defense was at its best, but when the 49ers made their late rally, Darnold was cool and precise in making sure the Vikings stayed in control. His pass from his end zone, 60 yards to Justin Jefferson for the 97-yard TD was breathtaking. About the time I was reflecting on how Darnold did what Kirk Cousins never did for the Vikings, though, I saw Cousins come through with a closing drive to beat the Eagles — the other favorite to reach the Super Bowl! The Vikings now lead the division at 2-0 and must become part of any conversations about the NFC title — thanks to Sam Darnold."

Brian Prudhomme on Friday's Duluth East at Duluth Denfeld prep football game (The Northland Fan 560 AM/106.5 FM, 6 p.m.) – “East versus Denfeld is fun for the community no matter the sport. I’m looking forward to broadcasting the game but also seeing a big crowd come out and support the athletes for both teams. I think Denfeld knows how good they can be, and it’s a matter of asserting themselves in a big moment. East is starting to find some success and would love to take a huge step by winning a rivalry game. I appreciate both coaches a great deal, and I’m sure it will be a fun way to spend a Friday night.”

Any serious statewide race in Minnesota begins in Hennepin and Ramsey counties. Klobuchar has repeatedly posted landslide margins there—numbers large enough to bankroll losses elsewhere. HowieHanson.com graphic

Klobuchar’s greatest asset is also her sharpest test: total name recognition. She does not need to introduce herself. She does not need to prove seriousness. She does not need to build trust from scratch. That saves time, money, and risk.

Howie on Duluth Tourism: How a local yes turned Duluth into a destination

Legendary Canal Park entrepreneurs Andy Borg and Mick Paulucci bet on Duluth before betting on Duluth was fashionable. They could have wished Scott Keenan luck and gone back to worrying about lunch service. That their restaurant brand didn’t need a long-distance running experiment attached to it.

Howie on Duluth Tourism: Why Duluth is taking back its tourism story

Supporters of the shift believe a homegrown approach allows for better targeting, faster response to trends and closer collaboration with local businesses and institutions. It also keeps more tourism-related spending circulating locally, rather than flowing out of state.
