Duluth East leaned on the heavy hitting of junior outside hitter Harlow Hartwick to notch a 3-1 victory over Hermantown in a nonconference volleyball match Tuesday night.

The Greyhounds took the opening set 25-20 before the Hawks bounced back with a 25-23 win in the second. East controlled the final two games, 25-20 and 25-17, to seal the match.

Hartwick delivered a match-high 24 kills to go with steady back-row play, while setter Chelsea Zentz piled up an eye-popping 54 assists. Ella Tormundson added 10 kills and five ace serves, giving East a balanced attack. Piper Witzman anchored the defense with 16 digs.

Hermantown kept things tight early, largely thanks to sophomore standout Lilah Conley. She finished with 16 kills, 17 digs and three aces. Setter Kylee Stokke handed out 18 assists and chipped in three aces, while Anna Bergerson added 13 assists. Kadyn Kimpling (15 digs) and Reese Lukovsky (13) also sparked the Hawks’ defense.

Despite Hermantown’s defensive grit and Conley’s all-around effort, East’s consistency down the stretch proved too much.
