UMD stuffs Augustana in series opener

The Bulldogs erupted for four second-period goals and cruised past Augustana 4-1 in the nonconference college men's hockey series opener Friday night at Amsoil Arena.

Scout Truman opened the scoring at 5:28 of the second, sneaking a shot through traffic and past goaltender Josh Kotai. Ty Hanson made it 2-0 just over a minute later with a blast from the point.

Callum Arnott added a power-play goal midway through the period, and Max Plante capped the Bulldogs’ offensive surge with a finish off a feed from his brother Zam late in the frame.

The Vikings spoiled the shutout with a power-play goal by Tyler Hennen in the third period, but goaltender Adam Gajan turned aside 16 shots to secure the win. Kotai stopped 33 of 37 for Augustana.

UMD outshot the Vikings 37-17 and finished 1-for-3 on the power play. The Bulldogs, now 3-0, will look to complete the sweep Saturday night at Amsoil.

The likeliest play is a polite handshake extension — one year, maybe two, at something closer to $2 million per. A team-friendly, locker-room-cred deal.
