UMD sweeps Bemidji State, visits Minnesota next weekend

Sophomore forward Jayson Shaugabay scored twice and added an assist as Minnesota Duluth powered past Bemidji State 5-1 on Saturday night at Amsoil Arena to complete a nonconference sweep.

After a scoreless opening period, the Bulldogs broke through midway through the second on a power-play goal from Shaugabay, who buried a setup from linemates Zam Plante and Ty Hanson at 9:00. Shaugabay struck again late in the period off a Hanson feed at 19:30 to give UMD a 2-0 cushion heading into the final frame.

Zam Plante extended the lead to 3-0 with another power-play tally at 5:25 of the third, again assisted by Hanson, who finished with three helpers. Bemidji State’s Kasper Magnussen spoiled the shutout bid with a rebound goal at 8:41, but the Bulldogs answered with two more power-play markers — Callum Arnott at 15:01 from Max Plante and Shaugabay, and Ryan Zaremba at 18:38 from Hunter Anderson — to seal the victory.

UMD goaltender Adam Gajan stopped 22 shots, while Max Hildebrand made 31 saves for the Beavers.

Minnesota Duluth (5-1-0) travels to face Minnesota in a two-game nonconference series next weekend in Minneapolis.
