Garron Opsahl, Bruce  Slygh and Carter Gunderson all had two hits to support a five-hit, complete game pitching performance by Cruz Runyan as Hermantown blitzed Grand Rapids 6-1 in a Section 7AAA winner’s bracket semifinal at Fichtner Field on Saturday. The Hawks will face a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the section final Wednesday in Grand Rapids.

Section 7AAA Scoreboard

Cloquet 2, Denfeld 1 (Denfeld eliminated)

7AAA Bracket

Tuesday

Cloquet vs. North Branch, 1:30 p.m. in Grand Rapids (winner advances to face Grand Rapids 30 minutes afterwards)

Wednesday

Hermantown vs. either Grand Rapids, Cloquet or North Branch, 1:30 p.m. (Second game 30 minutes later, if Hermantown loses first game)

Eighth-grade phenom Vinny Udd got the pitching start for Denfeld tonight against Cloquet. In my opinion, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound righthander is the best young pitching prospect in northeastern Minnesota since Jerry Udjur starred for the Gophers and pitched in the majors with Detroit and Cleveland in the early 1980's. The Hilltoppers, led by super-sophomore Chloe Johnson (31.3 points per game), enters the tournament as one of the favorites in the eight-team bracket and could meet No. 3 seed New London-Spicer or No. 6 Minnehaha Academy in the semifinals if both teams advance.
